National defence is the primary goal of National Service (NS), but NS should also be an investment in human capital, MP Gerald Giam told parliament on Monday (Mar 3). He urged the Ministry of Defence to transform NS into a “value-accretive” experience. Mr Giam called for an increase in remuneration for full-time NSmen (NSFs), a smoother transition to further education and incorporating training in NS that can benefit NSFs in future employment. He said this way, NS can be a launchpad for future opportunities rather than “an educational and career detour”.
