Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 2: Tan Wu Meng on whether Singapore is too soft on scammers

02:58 Min

A very serious problem calls for very serious measures, said MP Tan Wu Meng on the issue of scammers. Speaking in parliament on Monday (Mar 3), he stated: “Today, if a loanshark runner handles S$10,000 of cash, taken from a victim, they can be caned.” However, a scammer or scam runner who makes off with S$100,000 of someone's life savings, from a scam victim, cannot be caned, he said. He noted that this has led to some residents in his constituency wondering if Singapore is "too soft on scammers". He also called on the Home Affairs Minister to allow caning as a punishment for scammers, especially for egregious cases.
