Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 3: Poh Li San on sustainable cooling

01:17 Min

Air-conditioning alone accounts for about 24 per cent of an average household’s electricity consumption. Together, buildings and homes are the second-largest contributor of carbon emissions in Singapore at 19 per cent, of which a significant portion is from air-conditioning. The problem is that Singapore’s widespread use of air-conditioning is actually pushing up external temperatures and contributing to global warming. MP Poh Li San made these points in parliament on Tuesday (Mar 4). She wanted to know what the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment is doing to change the attitudes and behaviour of Singaporeans towards sustainability, so as to reduce the use of air-conditioning in indoor spaces.
