Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 5: Darryl David on JC admissions criteria, professional development for teachers and internships for neurodiverse students
As learning becomes more personalised and catered to students’ interests and choices become more diverse, having one aggregate calculation system for O-Level students’ scores based on L1R4 would not only narrow the perceived junior college (JC)-polytechnic divide, but also allow equality of access to higher education for both polytechnic and JC students in the future. MP Darryl David made these observations in parliament on Thursday (May 6), calling for the Ministry of Education (MOE) to review the post O-Level criteria for JCs to make it more aligned to that of polytechnics. He also asked for MOE’s update on its exercise to rejuvenate JCs across the island. Turning to the professional development of teachers, he also wanted to know more about the various programmes that are in place and if there are plans to enhance these programmes. In his speech, Mr David also noted that internships play a big role at polytechnics and Institutes of Technical Education (ITEs), and the experiences help students to thrive in professional environments and promote independence. He wanted to know what steps are being taken to ensure that neurodiverse ITE and polytechnic students who go on such internships have their programmes calibrated to meet their neurodiversity and differentiated learning needs.
