Darryl David on racial harmony and constitutional amendment bills
Under a proposal to protect designated race-based entities from foreign influence, their leadership will be subject to restrictions based on nationality. However, these may not provide sufficient guardrails, said MP Darryl David in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 4). He suggested that the Government legislate more thorough background checks on the proposed leaders of entities which are at higher risk of foreign influence or considered to be nationally critical. Mr David welcomed a new initiative for community remediation in lieu of criminal prosecution for less severe racial offences, noting that “a good number” of such incidents are not committed with intent but arise from a lack of cultural understanding and sensitivity. He asked if an expert taskforce will be set up to design and run the initiative, and how its effectiveness will be assessed.
