Gan Thiam Poh on Criminal Procedure (Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill
The new framework for Forensic Medical Examinations will certainly help the police force to solve crimes more effectively and accurately, said MP Gan Thiam Poh. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Feb 5), he hopes this will deter and reduce the incidences of crime. Mr Gan said the Sentence for Enhanced Public Protection is indeed suitable for dangerous offenders who are at risk of re-offending after release from prison. The public, in particular vulnerable potential victims of violence or sexual crimes, must be protected from such criminals, he added. He wanted to know more about the methods used by the Government to determine if the convicts would pose a threat to the public. He also asked if the Government would consider additional measures, such as the option of chemical treatments to reduce the risk of re-offending. Mr Gan also wanted to know how many convicts had re-offended after they were released from prison.
