Keith Chua on growing Singapore’s hawker culture
The Government has not been short of efforts and allocation of resources towards support for hawkers, said NMP Keith Chua. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 13), he believed that the support would be constantly reviewed and enhanced where appropriate. He pointed out that after the COVID-19 pandemic, there are opportunities for hawkers to improve their processes, such as going digital. Mr Chua pointed out that one big challenge for the hawker industry is that of succession. While some hawkers have moved into the second and third generation, many ceased operations when there were no opportunities for succession. But there are others who have scaled up into multi-outlet operations. Mr Chua said it remains to be seen how this would affect the continuity of Singapore’s hawker culture.
