Liang Eng Hwa on cost of living crisis
The rising cost of living has become a global concern and Singapore has not been spared. However, the country has a suite of policy tools to mitigate the effects. These include having a strong Singapore dollar to manage imported inflation, maintaining a competitive business landscape to keep prices in check, creating good jobs and income growth, and providing direct Government assistance. Singapore must consider how to continue to pursue policies which lower cost of living pressures on Singaporeans while not undermining fiscal sustainability and being responsible to future generations. MP Liang Eng Hwa said all this in Parliament on Tuesday (Nov 7) and in the context of those points, proposed amendments to a motion on the cost of living crisis moved by Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh. Mr Singh asked if these qualified as very significant changes but Speaker of the House Seah Kian Peng said they were “still within the ambit” of the original motion.
