Syed Harun Alhabsyi on Casino Control (Amendment) Bill
There is growing evidence that gambling can produce behavioural symptoms comparable to those of substance abuse, which is why Singapore must always be on guard against its harms, said NMP Syed Harun Alhabsyi. In Parliament on Tuesday (Sep 10), he said he supported the increased casino entry levies and asked if the authorities would also consider reducing visit durations to less than 24 hours. He wanted to know if family exclusion and third-party exclusion orders remain effective and have fulfilled the intent of supporting an individual’s recovery and preventing further harm. He also asked if there is a prescribed distance for ATMs to be located relative to casinos. He wanted to know if this is still an appropriate deterrent in an era of online transactions and if so, are there similar legal provisions for the proximity of ATMs to other gambling-related establishments such as Singapore Pools outlets.
