Tan See Leng on job openings for fresh graduates

07:47 Min

Employment outcomes for fresh graduates of the autonomous universities, polytechnics and Institutes of Technical Education (ITEs) have remained strong, said Manpower Minister Tan See Leng. Based on the annual Graduate Employment Survey, about 90 per cent of the 2022 cohort were employed within six months of graduation. Of those employed, 80 per cent were in full-time permanent employment, which is comparable to pre-COVID levels. The remaining 20 per cent in part-time, temporary or freelance employment were mostly in such jobs by choice, with the majority doing so to pursue further studies. Dr Tan, who gave this update in reply to an MP’s questions in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 22), pointed out that hiring sentiments have dipped in the third quarter of 2023 but the overall labour market remains tight. The number of job vacancies has trended down but remains high at 87,900 as at June 2023, and the ratio of job vacancies to unemployed persons stands at 1.94. Dr Tan said that given the economic headwinds, the Government is monitoring the situation closely and stands ready to assist the graduates. Fresh graduates can reach out to education and career coaches if they need support in their job search or tap on Workforce Singapore’s career-matching services.
