Vikram Nair on Immigration (Amendment) Bill

05:05 Min

With changes proposed in the Immigration (Amendment) Bill, will checks on people, vehicles and cargo passing through the Causeway and Tuas Link become less stringent, or will there be effective automated ways of conducting such checks? This question was raised by MP Vikram Nair in Parliament on Monday (Sep 18). He also asked if Singapore intends to share data with other governments which could make automated clearance possible for foreigners in Singapore and for Singaporeans abroad. He suggested that frequent travellers might be allowed to consent to this, which could be especially useful once the RTS rail link between Singapore and Johor starts operating. Mr Nair said this may mean that “travel from Singapore to Johor may one day be only a little bit more difficult than taking an MRT”. Separately, he raised concerns about the Bill setting out a legal basis for people who may lose their status as permanent residents.
