KUALA LUMPUR: A Molotov cocktail was thrown into the home of a Democratic Action Party (DAP) politician in the early hours of Wednesday morning (Jan 10), destroying one of his cars in what the party condemned as a “violent attack”.

Photos of the incident showed a car ablaze in the housing compound of Member of Parliament (MP) Ngeh Koo Ham’s residence in the state of Perak. An image of the purported Molotov cocktail showed what appeared to be a sparkler candle taped to a broken bottle.

Ngeh contacted the authorities at about 3am and the fire department extinguished the fire before it spread into the building.

Perak police chief Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the fire engulfed a Mercedes Benz while a Honda CR-V and Toyota Hilux were partially damaged.

He was quoted by Malaysiakini as confirming that the incident was suspected to be an act of arson.

DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke called on the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) and the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to take serious note of the incident.

Loke, who is also the Minister for Transport, said the Home Ministry and PDRM must ensure that public safety and order are always maintained.

"On behalf of the entire DAP leadership, I sympathise and express solidarity with his family.

"DAP strongly condemns this act of violent attack that threatens the safety of his family's life and insists that any form of violence is unacceptable in dealing with differences in our society," he said, adding that a police report was made.

He said: "We are confident that the police will act decisively and quickly to investigate and arrest the parties responsible for the crime."

Police said in a later update that they are working to track down the person suspected of throwing the Molotov cocktail.
