In ‘Culture Club’, Melanie Oliveiro speaks with illustrators/artists Michael Ng and Asher Yeo from the Organisation of Illustrators Council or OIC Singapore. Ng (known as The Mindflyer) and Yeo (Tororo.aoi) will talk about how OIC champions illustrations, art and their creators in Singapore. Together with creative producer Zu Wee Ling, they’ll also discuss the Illustration Arts Festival – organised by OIC – held from July 4-6th 2025. Now into its sixth edition, they’ll describe the festival’s main features and the more than 130 illustrators from more than 10 countries who’ll also be present.

CNA938 Rewind - Less waste, but also less recycling in Singapore last year

Singapore's overall recycling rate dropped to 50 per cent in 2024, its lowest since 2006, according to newly released figures. This marks a decline from the 52 per cent recorded in 2023. Despite the dip in recycling rates, official data show that daily waste generated by homes, retail shops, and industrial firms has decreased compared to a year ago. In ‘Culture Club’ Melanie Oliveiro finds out more about the Peranakan Museum’s ongoing exhibition “Batik Nyonyas: Three Generations of Art and Entrepreneurship”.  Curator Naomi Wang will explain how the exhibition steps into the lives of three batik makers turned master artists from Pekalongan in Java, Indonesia, a celebrated batik centre of the early 20th century.  Wang will talk about the creative lives of Nyonya Oeij Soen King, her daughter-in-law Nyonya Oeij Kok Sing, and her granddaughter Jane Hendromartono. Wang will also discuss the history of batik making as a dynamic process and art form, and new ways of thinking about entrepreneurship.
