Melanie Oliveiro speaks with Singaporean author Chew Ngee Tan, writer of ‘Sweet Braised Duck’ - her first novel. It tells the story of Kuang, a Teochew braised duck rice seller who comes to Singapore as a child from Shantou, China. Kuang and his family battle poverty. This leads him to giving up his education to work as a hawker assistant to help the family make ends meet. Twists and turns in his life eventually bring him back to embracing his hometown cuisine.
