25,000 people take first steps on Jubilee Walk

SINGAPORE — Thousands of Singaporeans marked the milestones of the nation’s history on foot yesterday, with the launch of the Jubilee Walk — a commemorative trail that takes visitors through over 20 historic locations in the Civic District and Marina Bay area.

The 8km trail, part of the closing celebrations for Singapore’s Golden Jubilee, was launched by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in the morning. About 25,000 people took part in a 5km mass walk, which took them past the Central Fire Station, the Old Hill Street Police Station and the new National Gallery Singapore.

Mr Lee also launched the Jubilee Bridge, which connects Merlion Park with the waterfront promenade by the Esplanade. Maps and bookets for self-guided tours can be found at all museums that are part of the trail, while free guided tours will be held next year, and conducted by volunteer guides. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
