SINGAPORE: A founding shareholder of seafood restaurant chain JUMBO group was charged in court on Wednesday (Jul 10) over a car accident that killed his passenger and grievously injured another.

Ng Siak Hai, 87, was handed two charges for driving without due care and attention that resulted in death and grievous hurt.

Ng is well-known in the local restaurant scene and founded Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh, remaining its face despite retiring in 2010.

The traffic charges arise from an accident along Nassim Road towards Tanglin Road on the evening of Nov 1, 2022.

Ng was behind the wheel when he allegedly failed to exercise due care and attention, resulting in losing control of his car.

The car veered to the left and collided with a tree by the side of the road, before overturning.

As a result, Mr Ng Thit Hung, a 72-year-old man seated in the front passenger seat, died from his injuries.

Another passenger, 75-year-old Tan Teck Soon, suffered grievous injuries.

Ng appeared in court on Wednesday with his lawyer Mr Choo Si Sen. He was offered bail of S$15,000 (US$11,100) and said he would be pleading guilty.

A date was fixed in August for him to do so.

For driving without due care and attention, causing death, he could be jailed for up to three years, fined up to S$10,000, or both.

For driving without due care and attention, causing grievous hurt, he could be jailed for up to two years, fined up to S$5,000, or both.

He could also be banned from driving.
