Low Thia Khiang's plans for Hougang
Workers' Party (WP) Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang said he will have to spend more time looking after the residents of Hougang, after the expulsion of Yaw Shin Leong.
SINGAPORE: Workers' Party (WP) Secretary-General Low Thia Khiang said he will have to spend more time looking after the residents of Hougang.
This comes after the party expelled its Member of Parliament (MP) for Hougang Yaw Shin Leong, over a lack of accountability amid allegations of extramarital affairs.
Mr Low was speaking to reporters at a constituency dinner, on Saturday evening .
Mr Low was the MP for Hougang for 20 years.
He entrusted the ward to his right-hand man Mr Yaw, and left to contest Aljunied Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the May 2011 General Election.
Mr Low said he spoke to residents during the first Meet-the-People session after Mr Yaw's expulsion, and told them they can look for him personally.
When asked if Aljunied GRC residents will suffer from less attention, Mr Low said he will spend as much time as he can.
He said he can "afford to spend more time", and that he will "just have to do more".
Asked about Mr Yaw being given one week by Parliament to appeal his dismissal, Mr Low said it's up to Mr Yaw, who remains uncontactable.
Mr Low said it's only fair that Parliament gives Mr Yaw some time to appeal, and he has no problem with that.
He said he does not know where Mr Yaw is currently, nor his plans to leave town.
On a possible by-election in Hougang, Mr Low said it's premature to comment as the prime minister has not decided if there will be one.
He also did not disclose who the possible candidates are, except that more will be made known on Nomination Day if there was a by-election.
