Man, 49, charged with allegedly throwing flare into hawker centre

SINGAPORE — A 49-year-old man who allegedly threw a flare into Kebun Baru Food Centre at Ang Mo Kio earlier this week was charged in court on Friday (Sept 29).
Aw Chang Loong faces one count of negligent conduct with respect to an explosive substance after being accused of firing a flare at the hawker centre located at Block 226C, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 at around 4.30pm on Tuesday.
The object, initially identified by the police as a flaming, “pipe-shaped” object, was reported to have landed outside a stall. Police said there were no injuries.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force sent a fire engine to the scene after being alerted to the incident, though the fire caused by the projectile had been put out by members of the public by the time they reached the location.
Aw was arrested on Wednesday.
The Singaporean, who was unrepresented, told the court on Friday that he plans to plead guilty to his charge. He is currently out on a S$5,000 bail and will appear in court again on Oct 6. If found guilty, he could be jailed up to a year and fined S$5,000.
