Man charged with attempted rape, robbery

SINGAPORE — A 52-year-old man was charged on Wednesday (March 15) for attempting to rape a woman in a hotel room and voluntarily causing hurt to another woman while robbing her of her mobile phone.
According to the police, Isa Ahmad, a Singaporean, used the same tactic on his victims: Covering their faces with a towel in a surprise attack. A district court was told that Isa allegedly committed both offences on the same day.
On March 12, sometime between 11.29am and 11.33am, Isa attempted to rape a woman in a room at the Hilton Hotel.
A police press release said officers received a report from a 27-year-old woman that her face was covered with a towel before she was pushed into the room.
After a struggle ensued, her assailant fled the room.
Hours later, between 5.35pm and 5.37pm, Isa is said to have robbed a 48-year-old woman in a lift at Tang Plaza, using the same tactic. He allegedly made off with her Apple iPhone 6.
The victims in the two cases could not be named due to a gag order. If found guilty, Isa could receive a maximum jail term of
20 years and 12 strokes of the cane for each offence. FARIS MOKHTAR
