SINGAPORE – The annual Primary One (P1) registration exercise will kick off on June 29 for children born between Jan 2, 2011 and Jan 1, 2012 due to start school in 2018.
The two-month-long exercise, which will be held in several phases, will end on Aug 28, the Education Ministry (MOE) announced on Thursday (June 15), and will include a new school, Fern Green Primary School, slated to start operations in 2018.
Phase 1, which opens on June 29 and 30, is for children who have siblings already studying at the school of their choice. Parents can submit the relevant documents through their older child, who will receive the forms from the school.
Phase 2A(1) opens on July 5 for children whose parents were former students and are existing members of the school’s alumni association, or whose parents are members of the school’s advisory or management committee. Results will be available by July 7.
Phase 2A(2) opens on July 11 and 12 for children whose parents were former students or a staff member of the school of choice. Results will be out by July 14.
Phase 2B opens on July 17 and 18 for children whose parents are parent volunteers at the school of choice, are members endorsed by the church or clan associated with the school, or are endorsed active community leaders. Results will be out by July 21.
For Phases 2A(1) to 2(B), parents have to submit their registration forms personally at the school of choice from 8am to 11am or from 2.30pm to 4.30pm on the scheduled dates.
Phase 2C, which is for all eligible children not yet registered in a primary school, will be held from July 25, 9am to July 27, 4.30pm.
Finally, Phase 2C Supplementary, for children not yet registered in a school after Phase 2C, will be held from Aug 13, 9am to Aug 15. 4.30pm.
For these two phases, parents who are unable to visit the school in person can do so online via the Primary One Internet System (P1-IS). They will need their SingPass to do so, and are advised to set up their SingPass 2FA in advance.
Children who are not Singapore citizens or permanent residents can apply to a school with vacancy during Phase 3, which will be held on Aug 28. Parents are advised to consider alternative education options too since admission is not guaranteed given the limited vacancies available left in this phase.
Under the Compulsory Education Act, all Singapore citizens must attend a national primary school. Deferments may be granted by MOE on medical grounds.
Parents are also reminded by MOE the address used to register their child should be the residential address reflected on their NRIC.
To qualify for admission based on home-school distance, a child must reside at the address used for registration at least 30 months from the commencement of the P1 registration exercise on June 29 this year, said the MOE.
Anyone found submitting false information during the registration exercise will be referred to the police. If a child was successfully registered in a school based on false information, they will be transferred to another school with available vacancies after all eligible children have been registered.
