SINGAPORE — After a prolonged delay, Samsung’s flashy new offering — the Galaxy Fold — will finally be available here from Sept 18.

In a press release on Thursday (Sept 5), the electronics giant said its foldable device will cost a whopping S$3,088.

The smartphone comes in two colours — “Cosmos Black”, which will be sold here from Sept 18, and “Space Silver”, which will be available from Sept 21.

When folded, users will be able to access essential functions on the device’s cover display “comfortably with one hand”. When the 7.3-inch (18.5cm) screen is open, they can “multitask, watch videos, play games, and more”, said Samsung.

The South Korean company said that it has been refining the device over the past months to improve its design and construction.

In April, Samsung sent the device to a small number of gadget reviewers, who discovered problems with its display screen.

This prompted Samsung to delay the Galaxy Fold’s retail launch.

Mr DJ Koh, president of Samsung Electronics’ IT and mobile communications division, said the company is now “excited to release this pioneering mobile technology and allow consumers to experience it for themselves”.

“Consumers have responded positively to larger screens, and the Galaxy Fold’s revolutionary form factor offers a bigger, more immersive screen without sacrificing portability,” said Mr Koh.

The device will be sold at selected M1, Singtel and StarHub stores and the Samsung Experience Store at VivoCity.
