SINGAPORE: Member of the Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for Transport Lim Biow Chuan said SMRT must be ready to implement the recommendations made in the Committee of Inquiry (COI) report.
This is to ensure these incidents do not happen again.
Mr Lim said: "LTA must work with SMRT to improve all these things whether it's possible to prevent 100 per cent - I cannot tell. But I think certainly there will be better management of similar recurrences. If the SMRT is totally reckless in the process of not implementing the required maintenance regime then I think the LTA should impose a higher penalty on the train operator."
Mr Lim also said that the added cost for maintenance work should not be passed down to commuters.
"All these maintenance regime, the cost should be borne by SMRT. It shouldn't have any impact on train fares for commuters to have to pay more fares.
"In the event that all these additional maintenance works cost too much, SMRT may want to put up a request to the government to see if they can receive any kind of government assistance.
"And if that were to happen, then the government should study carefully to make sure that SMRT is justified in making any such requests," Mr Lim said.
