Asia’s biggest defence dialogue begins
The Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia’s largest gathering of defence ministers, military chiefs and security experts will kick off on Friday night in Singapore. Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha will deliver the opening address. The South China Sea is expected to feature prominently on the agenda, with American Defence Secretary Ashton Carter and Admiral Sun Jianguo, a deputy chief of the Joint Staff Department of the Chinese Central Military Commission joining the conference proceedings.
Will PAS cut ties with PKR?
The 62th annual general assembly of Malaysian opposition Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) will conclude today. All eyes are on whether the Islamist party will approve a motion to sever ties with the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). PAS’ ties with other opposition parties, including PKR and the Democratic Action Party (DAP) has been fractured following disagreement over the implementation of the Islamic penal code in Kelantan. During PAS’ general assembly last year, party members had voted to cut ties with DAP.
Fresh attempt to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace process
France will host an international meeting in Paris to revive the stalled Israel-Palestine peace process, even though Paris’ proposal to inscribe a concrete timeframe to resolve the issue has received a lukewarm response. After decades of failed negotiations and gridlocked talks, France launched a fresh push to resolve one of the world’s longest-running conflicts earlier this year and push for a two-state solution.
Lions take on Myammar
V Sundramoorthy’s Lions will take on hosts Myanmar in the opening match of the AYA Bank Cup quadrangular in Yangon. This is Sundram’s first game as Singapore’s new national coach. The game will be played at 7.45pm. (Live on Singtel TV Ch109)
Singapore VS Malaysia (under-21)
The Singapore U-21 team is also playing its first match of the Nations Cup quadrangular in Malacca. The team, which will be competing at next year’s SEA Games, will face causeway rivals Malaysia. Kick-off is at 8.45pm. (Live on Singtel TV Ch110)
