SINGAPORE — The West Coast Community Centre will undergo upgrading from the first quarter of this year to offer residents more and improved facilities as well as family-friendly programmes.
Targeted at young families, youth and children with special needs living in the estate, the proposed upgraded community centre will include a new extension building with a playground for children with special needs, a new sheltered basketball court and mini-theatre.
There will also be two link bridges that will connect the community centre to West Coast hawker centre, West Coast Plaza and the Active, Beautiful and Clean Community Deck which will be built over the Sungei Pandan Kechil Canal.
The sheltered wheelchair-friendly link bridges will provide better access to the community centre and other amenities in the neighbourhood.
The plans were announced by Mr S Iswaran, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade and Industry, at the launch of the community centre’s upgrading programme yesterday.
“The community centre must be a place that brings all segments of the community together. We have diverse needs. And certainly, children with special needs is one aspect of that and also seniors and parents who come with the children,” said Mr Iswaran, after joining residents in a symbolic sand-pouring ceremony organised by West Coast Grassroots Organisations.
The community centre will continue to operate at its existing site during the upgrading period and is slated to be completed by late next year.
Residents will be invited to provide feedback on how further improvements can be made to facilities. LAURA PHILOMIN
