Singapore's sprint queen Shanti Pereira wins gold, keeps SEA Games 100m crown
Singapore's Shanti Pereira held fast to her SEA Games 100m crown, taking gold with a time of 11.36s at Suphachalasai National Stadium in Bangkok on Thursday (Dec 11).
She later told reporters she was extremely pleased with her time. "I've been chasing 11.3 the entire season, maybe even from last year. I'm just so happy."
Suphachalasai National Stadium holds fond memories for Pereira. It is where she achieved a historic sprint double at the 2023 Asian Championships.
Pereira’s parents were in the stands, giving her a thumbs up after her 100m victory.
Thailand's Jirapat Khanota (pictured celebrating and looking at the scoreboard with Pereira) clinched silver (11.54s), while Vietnam's Thi Thu Ha claimed bronze with a time of 11.58s.
Pereira won both the 100m and 200m at the 2023 Games, becoming the first Singaporean woman to clinch a sprint double at the Games. She will defend her 200m title on Saturday.
