In his 13 years representing Singapore as a para-athlete, Toh Wei Soong made waves in pools all over the world. But sport is only part of his story.

Diagnosed with transverse myelitis at age two, Toh found an opportunity to prove himself in the pool. But the pressure to excel came at a cost: a persistent, often private struggle with depression.

His search for clarity and authenticity led him to study philosophy, political science and economics at the National University of Singapore, graduating last year.

At 21, Toh directed his first feature-length documentary. "I've always been an artist first." He also launched a street fashion zine, written a full-length novel, as well as a novella.

While he isn't entirely sure about the next few laps of his life, he is clear-eyed about the legacy he wants to leave. "I have a strong feeling – even a prediction – that I will die as an artist rather than as an athlete."
