Abdul Samad Abdul Wahab on supporting healthcare

13:18 Min

The Ministry of Health should set up a team to look independently at shift schedules for healthcare workers instead of leaving this to hospital management. Workers need enough rest periods so that they can be alert at all times. NMP Abdul Samad Abdul Wahab said this in Parliament on Tuesday (May 9) during the debate on a motion on supporting healthcare. He also called for a review of students not being paid allowances while doing internships in hospitals, saying they should not be treated as “free labour”. Speaking on behalf of healthcare workers in polyclinics, he said they face just as much stress as those who work in hospitals. He said some have expressed hope that polyclinics can operate on an appointment basis only, as they see many walk-in patients even when appointments are full.
