05:40 Min

The Commissioner of Charities granted on average about 70 waivers of the 80:20 fundraising rule each year in the past five years. More than 70 per cent were for private appeals, such as within schools, churches and other organisations to support charitable work in other countries. The majority of the remaining appeals which were granted waivers were for disaster and humanitarian relief efforts. These include the Ukraine crisis, Pakistan floods and the Turkiye-Syria earthquake. Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Alvin Tan said this in reply to an MP's questions in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 22).
