Amy Khor on age limit for vocational drivers

05:11 Min

The accident rate of older vocational drivers such as taxi and private-hire car drivers is higher than that of younger drivers. A study found that those aged 70 to 74 were five to six times more likely to have had an accident compared to those aged below 60. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) had commissioned the Singapore Medical Association (SMA) to conduct the study, as it considered raising the statutory age limit of 75 for holding a vocational licence to drive a public service vehicle. SMA’s recommendation was not to do so, based on accident statistics and its own medical assessment. LTA has accepted that view. Senior Minister of State for Transport Amy Khor said this in Parliament on Tuesday (Oct 4) in response to an MP’s questions. She noted that taxi and private-hire car drivers must be fit to drive as they spend a significant amount of time on the road and are responsible for the safety of commuters and other road users.
