Baey Yam Keng on disposable carrier bag charge
The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment (MSE) as well as the National Environment Agency (NEA) will monitor the effectiveness of the disposable carrier bag charge which was implemented at larger supermarkets on 3 July 2023, and will review its impact after the first full year of implementation. Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment Baey Yam Keng said this in reply to an MP’s questions in Parliament on Friday (Mar 1). He said that the charge applies to all carrier bags regardless of size, adding that MSE and NEA do not track other retailers who have voluntarily implemented the disposable bag charge and have no plans to do so.
