Budget 2022 debate: Don Wee on enhancing student internship programmes, gig workers’ welfare

10:32 Min

All youths benefit from having caring role models, guidance and advice for their studies and careers. This is even more vital for disadvantaged youths to escape the poverty cycle, said MP Don Wee in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 1). He called for more Government incentives to encourage companies to provide internship opportunities for youths, adding that meaningful internships could ultimately help address local manpower shortages in certain industries. Mr Wee also urged a review of gig workers’ welfare, saying the current situation is "heavily weighed" in favour of platform companies. He said legislation may need to be amended to protect the workers’ rights.
