Budget 2022 debate: Leon Perera on easing poverty and supporting employment

Budget 2022 provides some benefits to lower-income groups, but their access to support can be improved, said MP Leon Perera in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 2). He that such support should be provided in a holistic and result-oriented way. To alleviate poverty and provide income support to lower- income groups, Mr Perera proposed improving the accessibility of state schemes, with one of the recommendations being to reduce the number of distributors of financial assistance schemes. He also touched on the need for more social workers, and to ensure that compensation is well matched to the rigours of the job.
