Budget 2022 debate: Shawn Huang on strengthening science and technology capabilities
With rapid tech cycles and disruptions to industries, Singapore must be courageous in investing and building its future capabilities, said MP Shawn Huang. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Feb 28), he stressed the importance of staying agile in a disruptive world. He said that while Singapore’s core strengths are in its education system, infrastructure, research and development, as well as business ecosystems, its ability to produce knowledge products and creative assets has been "less than ideal". He pointed out that Singapore has also produced fewer innovation outputs relative to its level of innovation investments. Mr Huang said it may be timely to consider re-establishing the Ministry of Science and Technology to better organise scientific efforts and make them more effective.
