Budget 2023 debate: Alex Yam on more support for mothers
Singapore can do more to support mothers “for who they already are”, said MP Alex Yam in Parliament on Friday (Feb 24). This means providing subsidies or grants regardless of their employment status or economic value. With Singapore's low fertility rate, he also suggested that the Government consider the merits of policies adopted in other countries, such as longer and more flexible maternity and paternity leave, more extensive healthcare coverage for women, higher childcare subsidies and a universal preschool system. He also asked what can be done to help those affected by increased property tax kicking in this year and if this will be reviewed in the future.
