Budget 2024 debate: Sharael Taha on fiscal discipline for sustainable Budget
Will the Government give us more? This appears to be the reply many residents gave MP Sharael Taha when asked what they were looking for in this year's Budget. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 27), he noted that there seems to be growing expectations, especially with the cost-of-living pressures, that every Budget should have a “giveaway package”. Even after the announcements, some residents continue to focus on the immediate needs, such as the CDC Vouchers. Mr Sharael stressed the need to ensure the Budget is sustainable for future generations while tackling the immediate challenges brought about by the higher cost of living. He said Singapore must pursue better growth and jobs by ensuring quality investments. This will equip workers for the future economy and create more paths towards equality. Mr Sharael said Singapore’s fiscal discipline, refreshed social compact and focus on keeping society strong and united will be key to navigating the uncertainties ahead, as well as turn challenges into opportunities for the country to progress as a vibrant, resilient and inclusive community.
