Budget 2024 debate: Xie Yao Quan on need for ‘two hands to clap’ to build a shared future

20:11 Min

It takes two hands to clap. MP Xie Yao Quan said this was his first and foremost reaction to Budget 2024. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 27), he pointed out that the Budget is a “statement of intent” about the 4G team’s Forward Singapore agenda and presents the first “breathtaking” installation of plans that is bold, ambitions and brimming with gumption. He stressed the need for citizens and the Government, as well as the whole of society, to work more closely and take action together to “make the plans happen”. Mr Xie said it can no longer be about the Government delivering the goods and citizens merely receiving. Instead, it has to be about the Government and citizens figuring things out together to build a shared future. He highlighted the need to apply this “basic orientation of action and collaboration” in housing, education, healthcare and uplifting low-wage workers.
