Budget 2025 debate: Edward Chia on rising cost of living and quality of life

14:52 Min

While data indicates that inflation has eased, prices remain high and families continue to feel the pinch, said MP Edward Chia in parliament on Thursday (Feb 27). He highlighted the importance of ensuring that the rising cost of living does not erode Singaporeans' quality of life. He also stressed the need for a comprehensive, multi-pronged approach to sustain real wage growth and meaningful job creation. Mr Chia wanted to know if the government has plans to encourage more employers to offer work-study arrangements, and what policies can be introduced to minimise workplace disruptions while ensuring that workers can upgrade their skills without compromising productivity. On the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) among enterprises, he also wanted to know what are the current resource limitations in scaling up the Enterprise Compute Initiative so that more enterprises can accelerate AI customisation and adoption.
