Budget 2025 debate: Wan Rizal on breaking down barriers to lifelong learning

15:38 Min

Lifelong learning must be the foundation of Singapore’s economic future, but many Singaporeans still struggle to upskill - not due to lack of interest, but because of practical realities, said MP Wan Rizal. He called for more effort to break down barriers such as difficulties balancing further education with full-time work and family commitments, uncertainty over whether upskilling will lead to better job opportunities or higher wages, and structural obstacles such as lack of guidance and policies to limit the risks of retraining. In parliament on Wednesday (Feb 26), Dr Wan Rizal also spoke about reducing stigma and enhancing regulation when it comes to treatment of mental health issues.
