Carrie Tan on Building a Healthier SG
Seniors gather to cook and share their meals in the estates. Elderly uncles provide handyman services in their neighbourhoods. MP Carrie Tan highlighted such collective efforts as the "soft infrastructure" that harnesses the power of the community to plug the last mile service much better than Government agencies can. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Oct 5), she urged the Ministry of Health to lead and help fund a dedicated community team to pool the "enablers for change" in the community. She stressed the need to enable residents to initiate and own the programmes, as well as take charge of their own health. She said besides physical health, the social determinants of health are key in achieving the targeted outcomes. "The more we care and share, the healthier we get," she said.Â
