Cheryl Chan on Constitution and Penal Code Amendment Bills relating to Section 377A
Singaporeans need to actively hear different viewpoints for the country to move forward, said MP Cheryl Chan. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Nov 28), she said this means achieving a calibrated balance between one's beliefs and practices without imposing on others. She said it boils down to the values that people are prepared to accept and adopt. At the same time, Singaporeans must manage their social expectations and perceptions, as well as recognise that there are other values which serve some unique groups or purposes. She warned against allowing the diversity of voices "to break us apart" and stressed the need to consider "when and how we want to be inclusive while maintaining our own beliefs and values".
