The Government should carry out a study of the recipients of long-term ComCare to see how many had become reliant on financial assistance in their old age due to caregiving obligations in their younger years, which kept them from the labour force. MP Carrie Tan said in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 2) that the research would help to project any trends into the future, to better understand the reality of Singapore's ageing society on low-wage individuals. It would also help assess whether a basic income for stay-at-home caregivers might be a viable and dignified way to distribute social support.
