Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Denise Phua on serving the needy and disabled

07:35 Min

The help and support on the ground should be better coordinated to reduce wastage and ensure that they go to the people who need them. MP Denise Phua, who highlighted this in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9), said there are many residents who are either "over served" or completely "missed out". For example, in food distribution, there is often repeat giving, wastage, and food items which are not healthy or do not meet the needs of the beneficiaries. The problem stems from a lack of a local network, plan or one-stop hub for caregivers, she said. She wanted to know how the Ministry of Social and Family Development can play a more active role to involve the ground better and direct help to where it is genuinely needed. She suggested setting up a local coordinator network to identify, curate and collate unmet needs. Turning to Singapore’s next Enabling Masterplan for the disabled, she urged the Government to ensure that it truly delivers better outcomes.
