Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Pritam Singh on COVID-19 manpower needs

03:13 Min

The Government should lay out its short- or medium-term solution to the manpower situation in public hospitals, said Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9), he asked the Government to share its manpower recruitment plans. He said the number of additional doctors, nurses and allied health workers needed in view of Singapore’s COVID-19 endemic strategy must also accommodate the prospect of other future contingencies, including Disease X, which is likely to overwhelm medical services. Turning to the manning situation in public hospitals, he wanted to know what steps have been taken for the transition to COVID endemicity, including hiring and training foreign manpower on an exceptional or urgent basis, to ease the load on healthcare workers in a timely manner.
