Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Seah Kian Peng on reviewing public assistance
There are about 4,000 people living on public assistance in Singapore - is that too few or too many? Is the amount of S$600 given out too much or too little? These questions were put forward by MP Seah Kian Peng in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9). He asked if there is a case to be made that the qualifying criteria for public assistance is too stringent. He also wanted to know how the amount of S$600 was derived and whether it ought to be reviewed in light of recent inflationary pressures. Mr Seah mooted a rethink of needs-based assistance, with the aim of allowing beneficiaries to “live a dignified life”.
