Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 6: Tan Yia Swam on the importance of extended family

02:46 Min

The importance of extended family has become more obvious as the COVID-19 pandemic led to the loss of human connections, said NMP Tan Yia Swam in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 9). She noted that grandparents have missed out on visits from children and grandchildren, and meetings with uncles, aunts and cousins have become difficult as it is almost impossible for two families to meet in public under the five-person rule. Dr Tan said that as a result, many middle-aged people have developed cognitive and physical dysfunctions. She urged the Government to simplify rules for interaction and allow people to make their own risk assessments on gatherings once the current COVID-19 situation improves.
