Committee of Supply 2022 debate, Day 7: Eric Chua on building a more caring, inclusive, united society through sports and volunteerism
Sport is a powerful force for good and a great social leveller. It also plays a critical developmental role for young people by shaping character and teaching teamwork. Making that point on Thursday (Mar 10), Parliamentary Secretary for Culture, Community and Youth Eric Chua announced the launch of two initiatives under SportSG’s SportCares. First, a mentoring programme to support 100 disadvantaged youths over the next two years and second, a suite of internships, scholarships and bursaries. A new Para Sport Academy will be established to help aspiring para-athletes move from recreational participation to high performance sport. Ten programmes will be introduced, starting with cerebral palsy football, para-canoe and athletics. Meanwhile, a platform called Team Singapore Cares will be set up to allow national athletes past and present to give back to the community. Mr Chua also shared the progress that has been made so far on “Unleash the Roar”, a national project to uplift Singapore football.
