Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 7: Masagos Zulkifli on strong 'spirit of citizenry' for success of Malay-Muslim community

20:40 Min

Singapore’s Malay-Muslim community has played an integral part in nation-building, with generations of community and religious leaders toiling alongside fellow countrymen to build the country, said Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Masagos Zulkifli. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Mar 6), he stressed the importance of this “spirit of citizenry” as the community builds on its success. He said by being active citizens, the Malay-Muslim community becomes vibrant, contributing and uplifting others in the journey towards success. To build on the sense of citizenry, the Malay-Muslim community will strengthen the foundation of the family and nurture future religious and community leaders. He said as the community moves forward, it has “not left behind” its cultural and religious values. This is because the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) continues to develop talents and strengthen religious structures. Mr Masagos said religious leaders play an important role in guiding the community. MUIS will establish a digital repository later this year. It will contain resources on Islamic and social sciences covering emerging issues related to governance, society, science and technology. This repository will help citizens to provide religious guidance with conviction and address contemporary issues faced by the community. To attract and retain religious teachers or asatizah in the religious sector, MUIS is developing common salary guidelines and ensuring competitive remuneration. The community will continue to expand its contributions. Mr Masagos stressed the need for those who are more successful in the Malay-Muslim community to step forward to uplift others to build a stronger Singapore together.
