Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 2: Gerald Giam on NS pay

01:31 Min

The current philosophy of giving full-time national servicemen an allowance for their basic upkeep needs to be reviewed in light of the significant increase in cost of living and the opportunity cost of doing NS, said MP Gerald Giam in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 29). He said as a first step, the terminology should be changed from “NS allowance” to “NS salary” and it should attract CPF contributions. The median annual salary should be at least the local qualifying salary of S$1,600 a month. Mr Giam added that such a move would not in any way diminish the ethos of National Service.
