Polytechnics, Institute of Technical Education colleges and universities have an average of only three to four Special Educational Needs (SEN) officers across the whole institution and a SEN officer cannot always be around to facilitate integration, said NMP Ong Hua Han in Parliament on Friday (Mar 1). He said that it is therefore crucial that all students are aware about disabilities so they can better support and include their peers. He asked if the Ministry of Education (MOE) could study ways to incorporate more lessons on disability awareness into the primary and secondary school curriculums. He also reiterated his hope for MOE to consider proactively including students with disabilities in activities such as physical education lessons.
