Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 5: Pritam Singh on hospital waiting times and bed availability
The daily median waiting time for a bed at the emergency departments of two public hospitals exceeded 16 hours at the end of January 2024; this information is published on a delayed basis of two weeks, said Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh. He asked if the data could be published not just at the median but at the 75th and 90th percentiles for a more holistic overview of the situation on the ground. He also asked if a publicly accessible resource could be created to provide information on waiting times and bed occupancy as close to real-time as possible. This would help patients and caregivers choose to go somewhere less crowded and better spread the load at hospitals. Mr Singh also asked how many patients overstayed in public hospitals last year and how the Ministry of Health intends to expand home care services over the next five years. He spoke in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 5).
